Worth a shot-send him to AAA and see how he does. Low risk, maybe a medium reward.

OT: It was a Lancaster County night. Phillies sign Lancaster County native Steve Kline. At dinner (The White Dog between 34th and 35th), I selected Lancaster Milk Stout, to go with Lancaster County chicken breast and garlic mashed potatoes.

Mildly satisfying, yes.

From the last thread:

Bob - I agree with BAP, as I said last night. If Burrell stays in to run there, he doesn't advance from first to third on Jenkins' single to right. He therefore doesn't score on Pedro's dribbler, and the game isn't tied after 8 innings. It was a good managerial move.

Rico - Reyes v. Rollins aside, I think sneed's point was just that, pace the off-season and the PECOTA numbers, this series is evidence that the NL East will be a tight race this year. If the season unfolds much like last night's game (and less like the game before it), we should be entertained by really good baseball.

JW - funny. As a longtime vegetarian, I am a big fan of the White Dog.

Before lying upon my dinner plate, the White Dog menu assured me the chicken lead a cage-free existence. As one guest in our party noted, it's possible the chicken met its demise by running into a tree.

Rico: There is no plausible case to be made that Reyes is a better player than Rollins. Comparing their career OPS (which actually favors Rollins) is idiotic, as the present version of Rollins doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to the 2001-2003 version or, for that matter, even the 2004 & 2005 version. Rollins' OPS last year was .100 pts higher than Reyes'.

The reason Reyes steals more bases is because he attempts to steal a lot more bases -- in large part because, while Rollins is hitting doubles, & triples & homeruns, Reyes is drawing walks. On a percentage basis, Rollins is the much better base stealer. He is also a much better defensive player.

BAP - nothing left to say about Rollins vs. Reyes. You said it perfectly

I'm not a huge fan of Steve Kline, but at least he's another experienced arm who gives us some depth. He used to be very tough on left-handers, but he was terrible against them last year & even worse in 2005. In between, in 2006, he was merely ok against them.

Still, if he pitches a few minor league outings and looks decent, I'd probably call him up to the big league squad. I've pretty much gotten over my man-crush on Clay Condrey, who I've concluded is just not a major league caliber pitcher.

Boston Herald reports that the Phils are interested in pitcher Kyle Snyder.

And let the record reflect that, by admitting a man-crush on Clay Condrey, I probably just set a Beerleaguer record for all-time most embarrassing online confession.

Since when is Jimmy a "much better" base stealer? I already pointed out that their career percentages are nearly identical.

Much better defensive player?

Homerism at its finest folks.

BAP:

That is much much worse than the Utley man-crush, my wife hits me on. At least Chase has piercing eyes and good jaw line. Clay's got the ol' chicken neck.

Morty... I've been ridiculed for my Chase man crush for a few years now...

my boys are good at busting ballz... Calling my computer the "Chase 2600" and so on...

when I say.. ."my boys" I mean buddies... not kids.

As of yet... I am unmarried... single and unattached....

and posting on a phillies blog and admitting a chase utley man-crush should keep that situation going for eternity.

If Kyle Snyder is willing to go the minor league deal route like Kline sign him now!

Rico: I believe you're the Homer. You keep throwing out career stats. If you go by career stats, Jamie Moyer is a better pitcher than Oliver Perez. In recent years, Rollins has been a higher percentage base stealer than Reyes. Much higher. I won't even argue with you on defense, as there is no decent statistic for it. Hoewver, I think scouts would be nearly unanimous in agreeing that Rollins is the better defensive player.

In the present time, Rollins is a better player than Reyes. Period.

Rico:

Homerism? Please. You came here talking about how Utley's "taking one for the team" was one of the most horrible offenses to "the game" you have ever seen. I wouldn't expect you to like what he did, but if that's not homerism, I don't know what is.

Mike:

Funny stuff. My parents and sister now knock me on it as well. What can you do?

Can we keep the Rollins vs. reyes to the last thread? I don't think either side is going to be convinced.

Morty:

Are we going to do this again? I said it then, and I'll say it now.

I DON'T CARE WHO IT IS. Admitting you purposely didn't move is a pathetic move. Should kids look up to bush-league crap like that? Should we teach kids that they should try to get hit by pitches instead of using the bat?

I don't care if it's Utley, Rollins, Howard, Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Chipper, Teixeira.... it doesn't matter. It's still lame.

That isn't homerism at all. That's being a fan of the game.

The Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox are "looking to trade" Kyle Snyder and the Tigers, Rays and Phillies have expressed interest.

Snyder was designated for assignment Sunday, giving the team 10 days to trade him or risk losing him on waivers.

You're right that there is no need to get into all that again.

My response again: homer, please.

Rico = Homer

Good, now that that's settled, we can move on to discussions of substance!

Ok fine. You think I'm a homer, I know you're a homer.

We're even.

It's easy for you guys to call me a homer since it was a Phillie that did the deed. Put DW or Reyes in that spot and you'd all be crying foul.

Despite losing 2 of 3 to the Mets, I'm oddly optimistic about things. Eaton has two good starts in a row (that's a suprise to everyone, I'm sure). The bullpen has looked more solid than I think any of us believed. Gordon even looked good again before getting that pitch up to Reyes.

I truly believe the offense will pick it up. I'm just not all that worried there. They have had trouble getting the big hit with runners in scoring position. I believe that will change. Getting Rollins back healthy will be huge. Jenkins has started to swing the bat well. Howard put one way over the wall last night. Even Senor Out hit one out.

It's hard to argue that this team isn't well ahead of the Phils at this point last year.

Am I crazy?

We all knew this would be a very competitive division, and I think this series just proves it.

Rico: No one gives a crap about a couple HBP's. Seriously, let it go.

Also, didn't you come on here and pretend that you were a Phils fan until we all called you out on it? That was weird, why would you do that?

Jack:

I never pretended to be a Phills fan. I purposely didn't state that I was a Mets fan because I knew it would turn into this. I was hoping to find some intelligent discussion.

Rico:

I have to call BS on you again. It's all part of "the game." Anything to gain an edge other than doctoring the ball or using some "flax seed oil" is fair game. Do you have a position on the move where a catcher pulls the ball back into the strike zone to fool the ump?

Do you see most people here whining about the call to end the game last night? Most people think the game was lost well before that.

If you want to call us all homers, go ahead, but to place yourself on some objective pedestal is ridiculous, as your posts demonstrate.

If you don't like the level of discourse here, if it's too homer-driven for you, go back to Metsblog.

My god, Rico... let it go. He was hit by pitches. The ump awarded him first. Quit crying about it... it's just not very becoming.

I guess if I'm going to be with homers regardless, maybe I should.

CJ: Completely agreed dude.

Disappointing crowd today.

Rico, I think the point we are all trying to make is that, while Reyes has a tremendous upside (and is younger, more dynamic player), Rollins right now is the better of the two. How many MVP awards have been given to shortstops in the last 50 years?

By the way, this quote speaks well to Cerrone's non-homerism:

"…on the final play of the game, reyes may actually have been out, but, wow, it was close…it was a bang-bang play…the umpire was between reyes and the backstop, with the catcher on the other side, so if he did tag reyes on the back – before touching home – then the ump would not have known anyway…nevertheless, he was called safe, so he was safe…"

Wow this is almost unreal.

doubleh:

I never claimed Reyes was the better player right now. Not once.

I've never had a problem with Cerrone. Someone has to be the voice of reason when everyone is waiting to jump off of a bridge...for Phillies and Mets fans.

I think some people have been drinking the Kool-Aid when it comes to the Phils' pitching. Just the fact alone that the Phils have had to fill 2-3 spots on their pitching staff with waiver wire guys should speak volumes to you.

More importantly, the are still last in the NL in K/9, BB/9, and K/BB by a wide margin. If this staff continues with anywhere near these results it will spell disaster.

The only reason this team only hasn't let up more runs is because there HR/9 is below the league average and this will certainly change once the weather warms up and Phils play more games at CBP.

here's a chase utley interview from the front cover of today's MSNBC
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22425001/vp/24066380#24066380

Morty:

Do you know what homerism is?

Cerrone says he MAY have been out. He admits it was close, and he admits that it was a bang-bang play. He also admits that the ump didn't have a good angle on it.

A homer would say he was definitely without a doubt safe.

Rico - I've found the discussion to be good, so long as you don't call one of the Phils a "massive douche" or resort to irrelevant points by calling those who respectably disagree (do so through statistics and good argumentation) "homers." Quit that and I think conversation would be fine.

Good fans all over disagree as to who'd you rather have at SS. I think there are good arguments to be made either way. To me, the question is how unique Rollins MVP season was. Another question is just where the much younger Reyes is heading. I don't think he'll ever have the SLG of Rollins.

Rico: You're monopolizing this board with inane discussions. The Phillies-Mets series is over. Go back to the Mets blog from whence you came.

stop whining Rico. There's a reason why your namesake was coaching high school BASKETBALL after his baseball "career" ended...

Rico: "I was hoping to find some intelligent discussion."

Once again, you are a liar. You called Utley a douche in your first post. There's no way you could expect intelligent discussion after that.

I think comparing Reyes to Rollins is apples/oranges anyway. Both are entirely different lead-off hitters. It would be better to compare Rollins to Ramirez.

"Last season, Kline struck out only 10 percent of lefty batters he faced, according to Baseball Prospectus, making him – in their words – "essentially useless."

Sadly he will fit right in here with the Phils' staff. As for "essentially useless" I would use that to describe Gillick's efforts in acquiring a situational lefty for the pen this offseason when his big move was to sign Youmans. When the Pirates have ZERO interest in a reliever (given their incredibly poor pitching and lack of setup guys), this should tell you something.

And Rico... Morty talked about Cerrone's NON-hommerism.

Kinda, my point, Rico. I called him a "non-homer." A compliment in other words. Please read fully next time, and don't respond by calling me an a-hole.

To throw you a bone, I will second Sophist's remarks re this issue.

Dumpster diving for pitchers again. Just because Romero worked out, doesn't mean they all will.

BAP - Agreed. Don't really care about the Mets again until the Phils play them next weekend. Much more concerned that the Phils' sputtering offense will be able to do much against some Zambrano tonight and a lefty starter in Lilly on Sat. Phils have will have an uphill climb to take 2 out of 3 from the Cubs considering how each team is playing right now.

I found that when most Mets fans want intelligent discussion, what they really want it to hear Phils fans bash their own team. You'll get that here, of course, but we also give credit where credit is due to our good players. But that's homerism, I guess.

My mistake, I took it as sarcasm.

However, if you're going to accuse me of not reading fully, I'll offer the same advice to you. I never called you an a-hole.

As far as Sophist goes, I won't disagree. I started off on the wrong foot. I admitted that I has too harsh on him, and corrected myself.

doubleh:

I don't get off on fans critizing their own team. What I got tired of on Metsblog was everyone getting off on praising the team, and anyone that didn't was attacked. It was stupid.

I am certainly capable of praising the Phillies and criticizing the Mets. I've done both in my few days here.

Uhhhh, ya did - "hypothetically," I guess you'd say. It's the internet so I don't take it too seriously, but don't go crying about "intelligent conversation."

Well, I kind of think the Mets fans learn that from the organization; even in the face of everything that happened last year, the Mets still thought they were the better team. I'm not saying the Phils were better, but I am saying both teams are pretty comprable and have serious issues which will prevent them from going all the way.

While the tit-for-tat first-grade arguing has been entertaining, um, hello everyone... Ric effing Flair posted on beerleaguer last night.

This is not lost on one Phillie fan. I'd like to thank Mr. Flair for his 36 years of making me forget all of my favorite teams/players lose in the end.

Wait. He lost in the end? Oh.

Rico sucks!

My two cents: I would take H. Ramirez over J. Roll or Reyes without thinking. Yeah, his defense stinks but neither JRoll or Reyes is nearly the hitter that Ramirez has shown so far. If Rameriz puts up numbers similiar to what he did last year without Cabrera in the lineup, he is one of the top 5 hitters in the NL.

Hell, I can only imagine the press that Ramirez would get if he played for the Mets. Steve Philips would probably have a man-crush on him.

Other than "Not at This Time" Kline, there were some choice tidbits from the morning paper that got my attention. The first two were merely quotes:

Frank Fitzpatrick on Kyle Kendrick: "I haven't seen this much nibbling since my rabbit died."

Brett Myers on god knows what: "In spring training, I was doo-dooing stuff up there, and I was getting outs, so I figured I could take it into the season." That's one way of putting it...

The other thing was the back-and-forth rift developing between Ryan Madson and Charlie Manuel. This is confusing to me on multiple levels. Why is this 'dialogue' being conducted through the go-between of a reporter instead of directly one-on-one? Isn't Manuel supposed to be the Ronald Reagan-like "Great Communicator"? And why are the Phillies covering their ears if Madson's telling them he might be hurt? What good does this denial do anyone? And why would Manuel get so indignant about it?

Rico - You do realize this is a PHILS blog and not a Mets blog. 99% of Phils' fans are not blindly obsessed with the Mets 24/7 and discussing them after the series is over gets old real fast.

The Mets still thought they were the better team because you have to say that. Every team would have said the same had they been in that situation. Nothing new really.

And Morty, think what you want, but there was no hypothetical name-calling in my post. None intended, I can assure you.

doubleh/MG: Yeah, it's dumpster diving. But at least it's dumpster diving for a guy who has proven a past ability to get people out. Granted, he didn't do so well last year or in 2005, but he did ok in 2006 and he's not THAT old. At best, he's a lefty out of the pen and an upgrade over Condrey. At worst, he provides someone we can call up when the inevitable injury occurs. He is surely no worse than guys like Darensburg, Castro, Blackley or Ennis.

MG:

I live in South Jersey (Phillies country), and the Phills are a division rival. I follow both teams, and plan on contributing regardless of who they are playing.

RSB--maybe Madson isn't much of a gamer and is just saying he's hurt because he's lost the ability to pitch? Just grasping at straws.
Like most hitters, I don't think Manuel likes pitchers much. Divas and only work every 5 days, etc. Hamels and Moyer would be exceptions, and I guess Romero and Myers to a certain degree. They seem to adhere to his philosophy. And/or are just good (except for Myers lately), which helps.

And I even think Myers has been in Charlie's doghouse lately. Myers sure was made at ol' Cholly, if you read everything he said about being yanked from that game.

"Ten days after general manager Pat Gillick said the Phillies weren't interested in lefty reliever Steve Kline, the club signed Kline to a minor-league contract."

Gillick wasn't available for comment (because he is Toronto stealing money for the 3rd season in a row), and assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. didn't return a phone call (because he only chirps to the media when Giles tells him to).

"Jon Lieber rescued the Cubs for the second time in the series by pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings of middle relief. He had 7 1/3 scoreless innings in the series, which the Cubs swept."

funny, i seem to remember lieber throwing a fit about being in relief early last season.

guess he got over that when the guaranteed cash stopped flowing.

RSB:

Good question. I read the same article as you, and came away thinking the same thing. Ol' Uncle Chuck has been pretty ornery this year, huh?

Also, the article quotes the team as saying the injury is unrelated to last year's, and then quotes Dubee as saying Madson's had a "setback." Straight Talk Express.

Rico:

the comment in question.

@MG -- certainly those stats are rough for the first 2 weeks. But the sample is a little small. We have 2 subpar stats from Myers who will probably 180 to 70 K to BB ratio. Right now it's 6 to 5. Jamie Moyer usually is around 2 to 1. Last year he was 133-66. So far this year He has 8BB to 1K. I highly doubt that trend will continue.

We've already discussed that Kendrick's numbers do not reflect his career (including minor) ratios.

Even Cole Hamels right now is working on a 2 to 1 ration 10-5. And his MLB career is like 3.45 Ks for every walk.

You are correct if that trend continues, we would be in last place by June and never recover.

However, I would bet that Hamels and Myers and Moyer return to their career norms. And Kendrick will improve on his current ratio (perhaps a AAA stint). I expect Eaton to stay the same rate.

I haven't examined the Bullpen rates, but they are what they are, I suspect.

I think I recall Lieber admitting in some article that he was a tad hasty to refuse the Phils when they asked him to do that...or something to that effect. But the general gyst was that he's eating crow, and unfortunately for us, he's doing it well for some other team.

You're splitting hairs here. I said "What if..." after you called me foolish and stupid.

I'm over it.

Would anyone be mad if I called Lieber a "massive douche"?

Question regarding next weeks series.

Do we start a 7 and 17 chant? Is that corny or fun along the lines of a 1918 chant?

I get the impression that Madson is hurt (same shoulder as last season when Madson heard a "pop" and was on the DL for over 2 months) and once again the Phils aren't going to acknowledge this issue for some insane reason.

Does pretending that Madson isn't hurt not make it so (head in the sand theory that the Phils have seemingly used the past few years)? Is the Phils' medical staff really that incredibly poor? Then Manuel and Dubee both go out of their way to rip Madson in the paper yet not a comment about Bruntlett or Victorino miscues? Strange.

"And Morty, think what you want, but there was no hypothetical name-calling in my post."

Please just stop digging - first rule of holes after all.

I think people, including myself, are happy to have a coherent Mets fan to talk baseball with and get a different perspective, but you've got to get off the pedestal.

sorry Moyer is at 4-4 and Kendrick is 1K to 8BB

MG:

I didn't get the sense that Dubee was ripping Madson, although Manuel certainly was. It is indeed strange to see Manuel show confidence in Brunlett yet knock one of his more valuable pitchers.

Forgive me if it's a little frustrating that you keep bringing up this pedestal when in reality I'm not being condescending or talking down to anyone.

Madson sure looked hurt yesterday. His pitches had nothing on them. No velocity, no movement. He was extremely lucky to get through that inning unscathed.

Not that I am a fan of the "Donut Eater" but he came into camp last year being told he had a chance to win a starting spot. Lieber pitched very well yet lost his spot in the rotation to Eaton (who got lite up all spring training). It was a complete sham competition just like this year. As long as Eaton's arm didn't fall off, he would be in the rotation.

If the Phils weren't going to give Lieber a legit shot to win a job in camp, it would have been wiser for both parties if they had traded Lieber earlier. Would have given Lieber a chance to win a job somewhere else and the Phils probably would have gotten back something in return.

Morty - Yeah. Bruntlett failed in the last 2 games in basic fundamental ways on defense and at the plate (with the failed sac attempt). Yet not a word yet Cholly rips one of his key relievers. Stupid is as stupid does.

MG:

Fair enough about Lieber, but he was getting paid quite handsomely last year and didn't put forth a good faith effort to help the team however he could. If I had a penny for every Phillie who underachieved and then performed well for another team...

Not to mention Lieber's obscene trcuk

MG -- the issue was similar to the Helms situation, where they were trying to deal Lieber but there were no takers and they kept it him for the injury insurance.

I'm pretty sure Lieber knew what was up, he's been around long enough. He was just unprofessional about the bullpen switch and wasn't prepared as if expecting to get traded.

Wasn't defending Lieber's reaction to starting the season in the pen. He did act very unprofessionally by not being really willing/prepared to pitch out of the pen to start the season but I can also see where he was coming from given the sham competition in spring training.

Anyone know the deal with Wheels being on radio now? I know it was brought up the other day about saying things he shouldn't have said, but I missed it.

Haha, Pat Burrell has a man purse.

Rico: Larry Andersen's the one who got moved to radio only. Wheels has a lifetime guarantee to be as visible as possible, being a close friend of David Montgomery.

Ah my mistake. Thanks.

RSB:

Wheels makes Montgomery feel "comfortable."

Sorry I wasn't here to say this earlier.

Rico, not that long ago you came on here claiming that Reyes was clearly safe last night. The only person who would make such a totally outrageous claim must be qualified as a "homer." Sorry. Just the facts.

It's like all those Rockies fans who insist that Holliday did touch the plate. (Who knows? In some bizarro universe maybe he did.)
But it is only in some bizarro universe (and the mind of a true Mets homer that Reyes beat the tag. (And I am reasonably sure that in about a dozen other bizarro universes the ump gets the call right and the game is still going - the fans have all gone home, Carlos Ruiz is pitching and Bruntlett is 0 - 18 with three strikeouts on foul bunts.)

So, unless you have recanted, you need to relax your penchant for name-calling. The log in your eye is bigger than the splinters in ours.

Whoa whoa whoa.... Wait one second.

Bruntlett going 0-18 with three strikeouts on foul bunts doesn't require a bizarro universe.

"Would anyone be mad if I called Lieber a "massive douche"?"

Morty, not sure about the second part; but he is pretty massive.

And Andy... you might be mistaking me for someone else. Here is the post I made after the game last night:

http://www.beerleaguer.com/beerleaguer/2008/04/post-1.html#comment-110271332

"Not here to gloat, no worries.

It was one hell of a game. I'm not going to say Reyes was safe or out. I've gone back and slowed it down 10 times and I honestly coldn't tell. Coste didn't tag his arm though, he got him on the lower back.

It was definitely one hell of a throw, and the definition of a bang-bang play.

Well played by both sides. I'm sure next weekend's festivities will be even more instense."

Not sure where the "Lancaster County native" info came from. Kline was born in Sunbury and went to Lewisburg H.S.
That said, I hope the "Sunbury native" can give us some much-needed help in the pen.
I pray he's not going to be a left-handed version of "Flush."

Andy:

Fair enough, but what about that truck of his? That thing is like a lifetime membership in the "douche club for men."

I'll call a spade a spade.

Rico is a troll in a Mets uniform.

I'm not sure why we're giving him any more time than we would any other troll on this blog. He didn't come here for intelligent discussion. He came here to troll. He says outrageous things and loves the attention he gets.

Everything he says is hollow with the back drop of, "Chase Utley is a douche." Sorry, you lost. You are a troll. Period. This is the last post I will ever waste on you. Thanks for stopping by. Now go back to Metsblog.

Morty - good point.

If you want to make the m.d. statement in re: Leiber, I will not object.

CJ:

I'm torn up inside... really.

"Replays showed Coste getting the tag on his lower back, while Reyes got his left hand on the plate. You can't see both from one angle, so it's near impossible to tell which happened first.

Posted by: Rico Brogna | Friday, April 11, 2008 at 09:52 AM "

Since you forgot, stellar.

Thanks for proving my point Andy. I didn't say Reyes was clearly safe. I think my view is quite obvious.

"You can't see both from one angle, so it's near impossible to tell which happened first."

How does that translate to me saying Reyes was clearly safe?
