Tropical Storm Hanna is expected to dump several inches of rain in New York starting tonight at 10 p.m. Conditions are expected to last through Saturday.
Forecasts are calling for 3 to 6 inches of rain in the Metropolitan area, with the heaviest rain and winds expected to come tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow night. The Phils and Mets open a three-game series tonight at 7:10 p.m. with Saturday’s game scheduled for 3:55 p.m. The storm is expected to clear out by Sunday, when ESPN will air the scheduled finale at 8:05 p.m. The teams have no common off days until the end of the season.

I guess some folks will expect Cole to pitch complete games in both halves of the double header or they will question his manhood.

I can see tomorrow's game being played on such a delay that Fox will drop their coverage and it will be radio only.

The bad thing about a double header is they often end up in splits. The Phillies don't need splits right now. Makes tonight more of a must win than it already was.

It will be interesting to see what they do. Saturday's forecast is calling for a 24-hour washout.

I'll be there tonight at that garbage dump, for either the Phils' biggest win of the season or for their official burial.

trash men dont get the day off when it rains, wtf.

Of course, I've read on the internets that the DH/split idea is an urban legend.

Is it wrong to expect 18 innings out of Cole? A true Ace would go both games.

I have tickets for Saturday's game. I live in Philadelphia. Please, MLB, postpone this one early. I beg you.

Of course, it's probably more common that in any two games teams go 1-1 than 2-0 or 0-2.

I'm not a fan of the double header because of the bullpen workload, but Kyle Kendrick would be available in relief on Sunday, along with the recent call-ups: Happ, Walrond, Eaton. Not that I necessarily want it to come down to that, but at least they do have depth on the staff now.

We need the Brett Myers that has been pitching recently to show up tonight, not the one from the 1st half of the season. I honestly seem him going 8 strong innings tonight and picking up the "W" and putting the Phils in the right direction for the series.
Ahh, optimism, it's like a feel good drug.

Myers leads the team in ERA since the AS break...his ERA is something like 1.72...not an exact quote but a guestimate on my part.

This is the best post I've read on here in weeks, in terms to viewing the big picture of the 2008 Phillies, from Bob on the previous thread:
Bobby D: Nice column by Bob Ford. What really stings is that the team has twice demonstrated its heart, first in 2006. They could have mailed in the rest of the games after the Abreu salary dump and after Gillick said we would have to wait a few more years. Instead the team went on a tear.
In 2007, the FO "moves" went bad (Garcia/Eaton). The team's response was to roll up their sleeves and scratch and claw their way to a division title.
They have earned their stripes and more than proved they have the nucleus and desire to be champs. It is the FO's turn to roll up their sleeves. And their response - "little splashes."
They should be ashamed.

Bubba: Don Newcombe used to do that. Big Newk had ba--s.

1.42 in his last 5 starts.
1.78 since his return from his minor league stint.

EF: Based on the forecast, there will be no delay. Hanna is slow moving. It will rain all day and all night Saturday and all day Sunday. Best case scenario is they get the bookend games in and the Saturday game gets played Sept. 29, which could be the equivalent of a one game playoff should the teams be within a game of each other then (like Rockies-Padres last year).

If you have tickets to Sat's game I would even bother going up. No way they get it in.

I just realized that a rain-out on Saturday could give Pedro extra rest and insert Ollie into the series. He has been very good against the Phillies.
Posted by: NYMSage | Friday, September 05, 2008 at 10:53 AM
NYMSage: How do you figure that? The rain won't end until Sunday evening.
Posted by: clout | Friday, September 05, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Of course the Sept. 29 possibility only exists if the game would need to be played. If the two teams would not be tied or within a game either way, then it wouldn't need to be played and each team would probably play 161 games.

Clout: It is supposed to clear out by Sunday. We're supposed to have heavy rains for a 6 hour span or so starting Saturday afternoon.

NEPP & Clout- Pitch 16 innings, drink beer all night and play outfield the next day!
Those were the days
Posted by: Bubba | Friday, September 05, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Doubleheader is not good news for the Phils. Don't know the exact number but it is incredibly difficult to manage better than a split during a day/night doubleheader. That would clearly benefit the Mets.
Posted by: MG | Friday, September 05, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Can anyone tell me the last time the Phillies swept a doubleheader? I know they were swept by the Mets in late June at home last year. I remember them splitting both DHs against the Braves in September 2006 on back-to-back days. They split one with the Dodgers in the beginning of the 2006 season. Also, the Phils have not played a DH yet this year, correct?
Posted by: BENTZ | Friday, September 05, 2008 at 11:35 AM
I guess the Met fan is saying the Mets could skip Pedro and pitch Perez on 3 days rest on Sunday, if it comes to that.
Posted by: EastFallowfield | Friday, September 05, 2008 at 11:38 AM
You're right, Ollie did pitch the last day in Milwaukee. That wouldn't work. Lucky Phils.
Posted by: NYMSage | Friday, September 05, 2008 at 11:42 AM
That storm is going to mess up my perfect Sunday... going to the Birds opener and then have the crew over to watch the Phils take the Mets. If they play a DH on Sunday it will be at the same time as the Eagles game I assume.
