Lookin' for that 1 to nuthin' game tonight; not based on the pitching but on the amazin' effectiveness of both line-ups. Add up the walks and ROEs and I bet they out-number the hits.
(Am I getting cynical or what? I can't wait for the inevitibility of that 162 game season to, like, kick in.)
Surprised by some of my friends who are not listening/watching the game tonight. Still Mets-Phils with 1st place on the line in the NL East.
Making food for this weekend tonight but I will still have the game turned in with the TV muted and the radio broadcast only. I don't want to hear McCarthy yammer on endlessly with his inability to identify an offspeed pitch, small broadcasting mistakes he seems to make, and have him trump his pseudo Philly roots because it is Mets-Phils.
Maybe it is only me but I find Sarge-McCarthy unlistenable to at times (especially for 3 innings) and I am really glad when Wheeler comes back into the booth.
Over/under that "former 15-game winner" for Lopez get used tonight in the broadcast - Seven. We are already at 3 in the top of the 1st for the radio broadcast.
Almost. Would be a nice change. Even last Saturday's game didn't feel like a blowout at Toronto... perhaps it was the sun and Canadian beer... but was just worried that the other shoe was about to drop. This game (fingers crossed) feels a little different thus far.
it's been too long of a wait for a game like this. even better that it's against the mets. we'll have to wait till lopez faces a healthy team to pass any real judgement, let's face it, the mets have been decimated by injuries and adam eaton could get a quality start against them right now.
if we were to go out and get a decent starter, like a chien ming wang or brad penny, do you think myers could have positive value in the pen if he's ready at the end of the season?
NC: he's getting back on track. less than 3 ER his last 4 starts, he's a 2 time 19 game winner, there's gotta be something left there. plus the sinkerball in this park would be great.
Guys, Wang isn't going anywhere. The Yanks have absolutely no reason to trade him. His salary means nothing to them. He's worth it to them just to keep Hughes and Aceves in the pen for rotation depth.
Batting Mayberry for Dobbs there would have been the right move, but I'm elated that Cholly finally let him hit against a LHer. He hit into a DP, but the world kept turning.
PS: I am enjoying tonight. We'll get Ibanez back, plus Eyre, and at least another trade, or two, plus Madson and Lidge will (must!) improve, so I think we'll play better ourselves. Hopefully the annual June swoon has left us allowing us to play some better ball. It should be a street fight from here out.
Fair point, MPN. Everyone will be getting better. I expect the Braves to get another bat, and the Marlins pitching will keep getting better now that Nolasco is back to his old self.
Thought it was kind of odd that Bako got the start tonight but it was obvious does what a decent journeyman catcher does - setup & frame pitches well and call a game that stays within the limitations of a guy like Lopez.
Lopez wasn't able to throw on the inside corner all that well tonight but I was impressed by his ability to locate the fastball on the outside corner consistently for a strike. Good movement on it too.
It goes without saying that this Mets lineup is pretty depleted. But they're still a major league lineup and, just last night, they pounded Paul Maholm, a decent pitcher. So all in all, this was a solid performance. I doubt very seriously that Carlos Carrasco would have done better.
MG: Their payroll is always supposedly depleted. They will find an affordable bat, though. Probably something we consider minor, and somewhat out-of-the-box.

I'm not taking the weekend off, it's the Mets. Win or lose, there should be plenty of laughs.

Not to mention how T-Mac knocks the Mets in the hope of gaining Philly following. He's got a ways to go from his days as a Muts broadcaster.
Posted by: Highland | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 06:46 PM
With any luck, Lopez will be motivated enough to earn the fifth spot in the rotation. Stranger things have happened.

How come the Phillies official web site shows 26 players on the 25 man roster? (I read Tyler Walker was DFA, but he's still there along with Lopez)

When was the last time that JRoll and Vic lead off the top of the 1st inning with back-to-back hits?

Jimmy, Shane, and Jimmy.... wow.
Posted by: MPN | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 07:17 PM

Sweep the leg Werth!

Man the Mets' corner OF defense sucks. Nice play Evans.
Posted by: MG | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 07:24 PM
Dobbs swept the leg, at least.

Please no GIDP Bako, please.
Posted by: MPN | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 07:27 PM
At least Bako turned the lineup over.
Posted by: MPN | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 07:29 PM
Gutsy walking Feliz there. But then Paul Bako (?!?) was next.
Posted by: curt | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 07:31 PM
Mets just came back from a 3-0 deficit yesterday for the first time this year.

Surprisingly confident. Those p-rods will start falling in off Lopez.
Let's go Mets.
Posted by: PS | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 07:54 PM
Only 38 pitches so far, pretty good, eh curt?

Unikruk: Nope, it doesn't. But look at last night's box score.. he was 2-4. And his only out tonight easily could've been a hit.

57 pitches through 4 for Lopez. Nice.

Looking over this roster, Dobbs definitely is the one with "trade bait" written all over him. Cheap, valuable, not essential.
Posted by: curt | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 08:31 PM
And it's nice to see you tonight, justphantastic. Missed you here over the last three games. Wonder why?

I hope everyone likes Lopez Tonight, because i have the feeling this callup is our mid-season accquistion.
Not saying he's great, saying this what were getting I think

Rodrigo Lopez is looking the next Bastardo.

Hey, PS, you working at the Marlins game again tonight?
Posted by: EastFallowfield | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 08:36 PM
curt - Madson looked like the guy on the roster who was cheap and valuable before his recent rough stretch over the past two weeks.
Dobbs is just another veteran bench bat who would likely have minimal trade value at best.
Posted by: MG | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 08:36 PM
Yes, sir. Trying to stay awake. Gamecasting the Mets game.
Posted by: PS | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 08:37 PM
Happ obviously too. Reality is that there aren't many cheap, younger players on this MLB roster right now.

Lopez ans Bako, a battery for the ages.
Posted by: curt | Friday, July 03, 2009 at 08:49 PM
MPN: No problem. As bad as things are, and have been for the Mets, they will get equally good at one point before the season is over.
Factor in that the Mets, in essence, will do more damage at the trade deadline than anyone (getting back Reyes and Beltran), I like where we stand.
But please, enjoy tonight. It's not everyday you see Rollins hit two doubles.
