Records count, but temper April expectations
Sloppy play, tight scores and sluggish bats are the symptoms, and they aren’t unique to Philadelphia. In a way, April shares similarities to September as they both test the mettle of a club, but the comparison ends there. Physically, most players aren’t in sync and the adjustment to the climate and speed of play has only just begun. The challenge, then, is to get a team that reached the finish line in late October 2008 to seize opportunities in early...

Phils use eight-run inning to steal win from Braves
The Phillies brought 13 men to the plate in the seventh and benefited from a complete bullpen implosion, using four hits and five walks to rally from a 10-3 deficit and avoid the sweep with a 12-11 win at Citizens Bank Park. The Braves' bullpen unraveled for six walks and a hit batsman, spoiling a solid outing by starter Javier Vasquez. Following a rousing ovation for Pat Burrell during the pregame ring ceremony, his replacement, Raul Ibanez, delivered his best...

Report-Adam Eaton has been spotted at CBP.
Posted by: Bedrosian's Beard | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 01:50 PM
Please tell me he is getting mercilessly boo'd at the ballpark. It wouldn't be a truly philadelphia event without it.
Posted by: thephaithful | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:12 PM
The ring ceremony is live (and free) on mlb.com but nothing's streaming yet. Anyone else having this problem?
Posted by: vicki | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:24 PM
yes, i'm have a problem with it, too
Posted by: Dukes | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:27 PM
has it started yet?
Posted by: Dukes | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:28 PM
mlb.com ring ceremony is showing me a sweet microphone that will hopefully get a ring...
Posted by: Hibachi | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:29 PM
well, i am watching comcast, and nothing is happening yet. they just interviewed jenkins, which reminded me of what a decent guy he is, and, also, how he was released without a replacement for no apparent reason.
why on earth is adam eaton coming to this event?? is he brain dead? he's lucky to get anything for his "work" last year, and he should feel lucky to get his ring in the mail or something. what an asshat.
Posted by: bathtubhippo | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:30 PM
i just see an empty podium with a mic in front in the Phillies press room.
Posted by: thephaithful | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:31 PM
Maybe it hasn't started. I'm seeing the sweet microphone, too.
Posted by: vicki | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:31 PM
Also, Chipper is on scratched form the lineup with a bruised thumb. Didnt take long to see him miss a game this year.
Posted by: thephaithful | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:32 PM
I'm not seeing anything either
Anyone know if Kendrick & Taguchi are going to be there??
Posted by: Bubba | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:33 PM
Hey - I see a field now! And they're playing "Electric Avenue."
Posted by: vicki | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:34 PM
I can't imagine Kendrick or Taguchi having anything better to do, so I assume they will be there...
Posted by: Hibachi | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:35 PM
MLB.com feed rolling now, showing Burrell in the dugout pulling a solid Ray Liotta Goodfellas look.
Posted by: Hibachi | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:36 PM
Kendrick is supposed to be there
Posted by: Stan | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:37 PM
Anyone else hearing "Runaround"? Nothing like Blues Traveler to get me in the mood for a ring ceremony.
Posted by: king myno | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:37 PM
and the audio cut out... not even the musical styling of John Popper anymore
Posted by: Gaze | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:42 PM
I'm funny how? I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you?
Posted by: clout | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:43 PM
sad but true fact: i once purchased john popper's solo album. i think i still have it somewhere.
Posted by: bathtubhippo | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:43 PM
JESUS. Feliz again?! Come on, Charlie.
Posted by: king myno | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:43 PM
Burrell's gonna make sure his ring ends up touching each and every one of those ballgirls before his flight back to boston.
Posted by: thephaithful | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:49 PM
king: Feliz would have to be hitting .115 on June 30 before Cholly would sit him against RHP. Even then, it would be only against tough righties.
Posted by: clout | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:52 PM
taguchi and seanez couldn't be there today? what exactly are they doing that's better?
Posted by: bathtubhippo | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:55 PM
gillick looks really emotional.
Posted by: mike cunningham | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:56 PM
Does the Phanatic get one?
Posted by: Gaze | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:56 PM
eaton is such a tremendous douche. gets booed (obviously) and raises his arms to taunt the fans and shows the ring right to the camera.
Posted by: bathtubhippo | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:57 PM
Boooooooooooooooo Dong Lein
Posted by: thephaithful | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 02:59 PM
Eaton got booed so loud. I love it.
Posted by: king myno | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:02 PM
Damn, that is one loud ovation for the Bat.
Posted by: Matt | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:02 PM
Gillick was tearing up for Pat Burrell.
Posted by: Gaze | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:06 PM
That was really cool. Now 2008 is officially over.
Let hitting season begin.
Posted by: mike cunningham | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:11 PM
That makes me miss the Bat.
Posted by: Indiana Sarge | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:12 PM
I want a replica ring instead of a wedding band when I get married this year.
Posted by: Mike | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:17 PM
burrell makes that throw.
Posted by: petey | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:26 PM
unreal. the phillies are cursed.
Posted by: petey | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:27 PM
Unbelievable. How do they do this every day?
Posted by: Jack | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:27 PM
C'mon Joe!
Oh...for better or worse, Josh Outman will be pitching Friday night at the A's home opener.
Posted by: out of my league | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:28 PM
Brian McCann - again and again!
Posted by: J. Weitzel | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:28 PM
Great, another fine start....
Posted by: JaredK | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:28 PM
c'mon.... we get it, we aren't allowed to be happy.
Posted by: ZT | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:28 PM
Why do you throw a high changeup to McCann with 1st base open? Anyone have any idea?
Posted by: Jack | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:29 PM
Hahaha. Way to go Phillies. How do you let Escobar hit a double off of you? Oh, because your fourth starter Joe Blanton, similar to third starter Jamie Moyer, similar to second start Brett Myers are all garbage!
Posted by: Burrell's Ghost | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:29 PM
14 karats and 103 diamonds can't save the Phils from giving up 2 runs in the 1st inning for the 3rd straight game.
That's a shitty pattern to fall into.
Posted by: GM-Carson | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:31 PM
How I missed Wheels slurping over the opposing team's starting pticher. You'd think Vazquez was the second coming.
Posted by: Mike | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:31 PM
"second coming" and "slurping"...ewwww!!!
Posted by: GM-Carson | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:33 PM
Brian McCann is the Phillie killer this year I guess
Posted by: The Truth Injection | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:35 PM
Can we maybe not play from behind at once?
Posted by: Albert | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:36 PM
Sorry for the unintentional double entendre.
Posted by: Mike | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:36 PM
clout: I want to believe that he's putting the World Series-winning lineup out there on ring day. Because I see NO other reason not to give Dobbs innings 1-6 versus Vazquez.
Posted by: king myno | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:36 PM
Team is playing completely lifeless. We ripped every pundit who thought we'd take a step backwards this year, but maybe they were right.
Posted by: Jack | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:36 PM
Brian McCann killed the Phils early last season, too.
They just don't seem ready to play. I don't know what it is about this team that it takes them a few weeks into the season to start playing good baseball.
Posted by: Bridoc10 | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:38 PM
Jack, its the third game...
Posted by: Albert | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:38 PM
Just heard what happened in the first inning. It's like a bad dream.
Posted by: BobbyD | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:39 PM
I just don't get why they would throw McCann a pitch he could hit out of the park. He's the only dangerous hitter in the lineup with Chipper out. First base is open. Throw him junk low and away.
Posted by: Jack | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:42 PM
Man Pat's bat is sorely lacking, should have at least signed Sheffield. This offense is putrid!!
Posted by: Burrell's Ghost | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:42 PM
Rauuuuuuuuuullllllll!!
Posted by: Matt | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:48 PM
Pat who?
Posted by: mike cunningham | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:48 PM
Raul must've been mad at the Bat lovin.
Posted by: ZT | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:48 PM
Yawn.
Posted by: Pat Burrell | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:48 PM
Pat Burrell would have hit that further.
Posted by: Wes Chamberlain | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:49 PM
Feliz attempting a steal?
Posted by: J. Weitzel | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:50 PM
Actually, I would have hit it farther, not further. But no matter.
Posted by: Pat Burrell | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:50 PM
Wes, i think the correct joke there is: "PtB would have hit a 3-run homer there."
Posted by: Ghost of Luis Aguayo | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:51 PM
Hopefully that'll wake them up.
Posted by: king myno | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:51 PM
LOL @ Wes Chamberlain:
OK. Maybe NOW they got the butterflies out. Let's go, Phillies!
Posted by: Bridoc10 | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:51 PM
good discipline at the plate by our 7-8 that inning.
Posted by: bathtubhippo | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:53 PM
blanton's turn to go deep?
Posted by: rmp | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:53 PM
ZZ Bottom (thanks whoever coined that) gets on base but our leadoff hitter can't? Let bizarro season begin.
Posted by: Doohickey | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 03:58 PM
Who had Raul Ibanez in the first-Phillies-home-run pool?
Posted by: CJ | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:00 PM
I hate that Eaton got booed. It's stupid. Also stupid is that there's still no outs.
Posted by: BobbyD | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:02 PM
CJ: I think I was the only one.
Posted by: Ruben Amaro Jr. | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:03 PM
Blanton has looked solid today, exceot for giving up those runs of course. He's kept the ball down for the most part.
Posted by: Mike | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:04 PM
i dont like that eaton was booed, but he should have stayed in baltimore
Posted by: redbeard | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:05 PM
Pathetic.
Posted by: Matt | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:05 PM
Nevermind.
Posted by: Mike | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:05 PM
do they know what pitches are coming or what? this is crazy.
Posted by: redbeard | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:06 PM
Off to another wonderful day at the ballpark.
Posted by: ZT | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:06 PM
Eff this sh*t.
Posted by: Matt | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:06 PM
this is painful
Posted by: Tom | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:07 PM
This is infruriating. The Braves just sit there in their dugout waiting for all the World Series stuff to be over the last three days. Then they go out and laugh at the Phillies.
Posted by: BobbyD | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:07 PM
Is 0-3 also just a drop in the bucket?
Posted by: petey | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:07 PM
hm, blanton has looked really solid today, except for the continual hit parade that's occurred most of the game.
Posted by: bathtubhippo | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:07 PM
Yeah. Six hits over 2.1 innings. Not bad. Is Eaton still in the ballpark?
Posted by: Doohickey | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:07 PM
Another hard lesson on why spring training stats mean squat. There wasn't a better pitcher than Blanton this spring.
Posted by: J. Weitzel | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:07 PM
Are we sure Eaton isn't actually pitching?
Posted by: That Dude | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:08 PM
They're going to be spending all of April trying to get to .500. Again.
Posted by: BobbyD | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:08 PM
Eeep.
Posted by: king myno | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:09 PM
Blanton sporting a Kendrick-like 2.5 WHIP
Posted by: baxter | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:09 PM
Let the overreacting begin
Posted by: The Truth Injection | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:10 PM
I know the opening series doesn't determine the rest of the season, but things couldn't have started worse for the Phils. All 3 starting pitchers have been whipped, and it's gotten worse each game. Braves look awesome, we look lifeless.
Posted by: GM-Carson | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:10 PM
Truth - I know it's a long season, but you shouldn't just excuse bad play.
Posted by: king myno | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:12 PM
Mets fan here.
Wow. I certainly did not expect the Phillies to get off to this kind of start this year. You guys will settle down. You have too good a team. But you need to get Hamels, your "stopper," back on the mound.
This series only serves to confirm my fear that the Atlanta Braves are going to contend this year.
Posted by: The Glider | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:13 PM
I'm all about keeping things in perspective, but this is a little ridiculous.
What is it with this team that they come north completely unready to play? Do we need Eskin and Cholly to get into a shouting match before this team wakes up and remembers how to play winning baseball?
It's frustrating...and a total buzzkill. Hoist a flag, give out rings, and get your asses handed to you by the hated Atlanta Braves.
I've waited all winter for this? I wish there was a Flyers game on now that I could change the channel to...
Posted by: Bridoc10 | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:13 PM
This is probably the best thing that could happen to the Phils. Now they can get their heads out of their ass and start playing baseball. Nobody cares about 2008 anymore.
Posted by: Tony D | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:14 PM
There's no overreacting when your team is playing this bad. This is bad, really f'n bad. Stating that it's bad isn't overreacting, it's being factual.
Posted by: GM-Carson | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:14 PM
And the comeback begins!
Posted by: Adam Eatin' | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:15 PM
looks like we need luck to get our offense kick started.
Posted by: ZT | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:15 PM
In 2007 we got swept by the Braves in the opening series and went on to lose in the first round of the playoffs.
Last year we lost our first two games of the season, getting shutout in the 2nd one, and then went down 5 runs in the early innings of the third game but came back and won. We of course went on to win the World Series.
What I'm getting at is.. the rest of this game will decide EVERYTHING.
Posted by: Brian G | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:16 PM
Brian G.: lmao
This is the biggest must win of the season then.
Posted by: ZT | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:17 PM
It all comes down to the final 17 games, remember?
Posted by: The Glider | Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 04:18 PM
