MRI reveals tendinitis in Utley's right knee
"Tired legs" my you-know-what. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro says Chase Utley had an MRI yesterday that revealed Patella tendinitis in his right knee. More later. On the bright side, it's only Feb. 27. Better to have this scoped out now than wait until it gets worse. Meanwhile ... Michael Young anyone?

Game chat: A new day dawns for Phils in Dunedin
Sunday marked the darkest day of spring so far. Roy Halladay and company are hoping to brighten spirits today against the Blue Jays. Preview: With news of Chase Utley’s knee, Domonic Brown’s 0-for-3 and a pair of rocky debuts by Justin De Fratus and Michael Schwimer, the Phillies experienced their first reality check of spring yesterday. Good thing there are 31 days until the games actually count. ... For the Jays, familiar left-hander and former Brave Jo-Jo Reyes will start...

Here's my comment: I look very forward to watching Werthless strand base runners in a Nats uniform. Most overrated player in recent Phillies history. 20 years from now I'll remember him as the guy who took the spot of that Geoff Jenkins fella! Assuming I remember Geoff Jenkins.

anyone with a nonvideo link?
Posted by: lorecore | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 09:35 AM
Big deal. Frankly even got as much coverage because there are essentially so few non-stories that actually on the diamond. Only so much mileage you can squeeze out of the actual games and thrilling issues like 'Will D. Young make the last roster spot?' or 'Will Mayberry ever learn to hit an offspeed pitch?'

Gotta do something to create interest during this dull time of spring training.Let's make a mountain out of this mole hill.
Posted by: jr | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 09:40 AM
Ugh, who cares? Charlie obviously doesn't, judging from the smirk on his face. Werth's just trying to ingratiate himself with his new team, if he said any of that in the first place.
Posted by: Matt | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 09:43 AM
I can't imagine that Jayson Werth is endearing himself to his new teammates and his new fans by constantly talking about the Phillies ...
Posted by: Chris | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 09:54 AM
why is it Jayson doing all the talking? isn't Ryan Zimmerman their best player? is he a mute? or maybe he realizes that when you're set to win no more than 70 games it's best to keep your mouth shut. werth really needs to get over us. until then, i post this again:

Yeah. Werth is a jerk. We knew it when he was our jerk, too.
If the Phils play so dirty, why is it that the Natinals throw at the Phils ALL. THE. TIME?
Posted by: Andy | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Wasn't it Lannan who beaned Utley on his hand and the Nats GM is saying the Phils play dirty. That guy can go "bleep" himself.
Posted by: Tim from Williamsport | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 10:09 AM
The Nats need swagger and Werth is trying make it happen. This is a team that could contend in a couple of years and if they are serious they need to start acting like it.
Posted by: MisterZoomer | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 10:20 AM
It's amazing how these once invaluable players become garbage as soon as they leave. First, Werth. Now one NL scout is saying the same of Chad Durbin, whom he calls "the 13th pitcher on a 12-man staff." I'd sure like to see a list of these 12 Phillie pitchers who are better than Chad Durbin.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Yeah come on guys, hate the Phillies, I don't want to play for the Phillies, why does everyone want to play for the Phillies?, hate the Phillies...let's go.
Posted by: Meyer | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Hitting Utley didn't really seem dirty at the time, it was Lannan's MLB debut so could equate to nerves.
But beaning Howard the very next pitch, after Howard just homered off him last at bat?
Yeah, thats dirty.

Thomas Boswell is the one who hates the Phillies. That guy is a tool. I give the benefit of the doubt here to Rizzo.
Posted by: RSB | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 10:48 AM
BAP: well Durbin sure isnt the 5th best starter or 3rd best right handed reliever - so does it really matter if he's the 10th or 13th best pitcher when he's asking for guaranteed money?

From the previous thread:
"Saying "see, you can't prove it 100% to be true" is the last refuge of people who know they cannot win an argument at the logical or theoretical level.
Posted by: Jack | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 08:54 AM"
Jack, what argument? TTI and I have both agreed that there are affects of aging, and that there are age related injuries. I also believe that recovery times are slower for older athletes.
My point to you was that you keep bringing the same point up over and over again, just worded differently. We get it, OK?
But since you seem to think the Phillies injuries were all age-related, answer these questions:
1) Utley's injury when he was hit by Lannan: Was it age related, that is, if he was 22 years old would his bone have been broken or not been broken?
2) His hip injury and subsequent surgery: This seems likely to be age-related, as it could be the result of wear and tear from sharp lateral movements and Utley's all-out style. Still, J.C. Ramirez seems to have had a similar injury/surgery at the age of 22. So, in your opinion was the injury to Utley age-related? (Personally, in Utley's case I think it highly likely.)
3) Utley's thumb injury: Was it age related, that is, if Utley was 22 years old, would he have sustained it sliding into the bag, or would it not have occured due to his young age?
4) Howard's ankle injury: Did you see the play? If Howard had been 22 years old and caught his spikes like that trying to get back to a base, would he have bounced up injury free?
I'm really interested in your view on these, because you seem to be so well informed, and so very, very right about things here all the time.
Thanks in advance.

Whatever, the comment was stupid and pointless and Rizzo is a douchenozzle.

The add on the side of the website has the beerleager website on a IPad. At the bottom of the add it says, beerleager looks better on the IPad. But the website on the IPad cannot play the Charie Manual video. I love the beerleager, however that needs to be fixed. I'll still check in everyday.

Living in DC, Boswell's about the last WaPo writer that I can actually stomach.
I don't think the Phils are dirty in the classic sense, but the Nats aren't the first to call them dirty-Colorado did as well. Maybe they have more of a reputation than we think. Do I care? No.

Is anybody else worried about the Mets? MLB had to loan them 25 million to keep going. I was devastated when Minaya and Jerry Manuel were let go, but the Wilpons must retain control of the franchise. What a sad turn of events it would be if someone competent were to take over the reins. Can we start some kind of a fund to help them out? Maybe have a beef and beer or something? What does everyone think? I'm truly worried here.

"Howard's ankle injury: Did you see the play? If Howard had been 22 years old and caught his spikes like that trying to get back to a base, would he have bounced up injury free?"
I have 0 medical education, but I bet there are plenty of studies that prove flexiblity deteriates with age.

Can't say i'm really interested in continuing to read the age/injury argument that's going back and forth.
Posted by: Bedrosian's Beard | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 11:17 AM
I don't see what's so difficult to comprehend about what awh and TTI are saying here. They are arguing that while it is entirely true that age heightens injury risk, the injuries suffered last year by Polanco, Howard and Utley were all injuries that can't possibly be proven to be age-related. There's no one in the world that can prove Polanco's elbow would have healed up faster if he were five years younger. No one.
The issue here is with certain posters that have a hard-line opinion that the team is too old. That's a valid opinion to have. But when you start using every little injury to try to bolster that point, it just looks like you're trying really hard to win an argument instead of actually looking objectively at the situation.
It reminds me of last year when certain people were touting Atlanta as a juggernaut and would lecture every poster here after every Braves late-inning victory as if the win had proven their point.
Posted by: Iceman | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Iceman: Name one injury that is 100% tied to someone's age?
I've yet to hear about how someone's hamstring got pulled when the clock struck 12:01am and they officially became 35 years old.
I'm one your/tti/awh's side - that othesr are making too big of a deal about the injuries, but your arguments are pointless and irrelevant. Of course Polanco's injury was a result of a wild pitch, Jack isn't claiming that a calendar with his 34th birthday circled hit him in the elbow at 90mph.
Ask a doctor - "what would be your diagnosis of a human being being hit with a baseball on the elbow at 90mph." Guess what his first 2-3 question would be? I bet "How old is the person being hit?" is one of them.
Posted by: lorecore | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 11:30 AM
Taking stock of who started the "story," I tend to believe Rizzo's very flat-out denial that the conversation ever took place.
Posted by: JeffS | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 11:35 AM
The worst thing for the Phillies would be for the Wilpons to sell the Mets to someone with real money.
Perhaps Monty should offer them a loan to keep them going?

That isn't the websites problem. It's Apple, iPad's won't play Flash I believe and that is why the videos don't work.
Posted by: Tim from Williamsport | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 11:49 AM
That's what I'm thinking NEPP. This is a bad development. Fortunately, Fred Wilpon is practically best friends with Bud Selig, so I guess we can expect major league baseball to keep propping them up. Got to love Bud. Won't allow the Dodgers to accept a 200 million dollar loan from Fox (I understand why), but has no trouble helping out the Wilpons. Sounds a little like Bud is trying to choose who can and can't own a franchise. In theory I agree with him about the Dodgers. I'm sure they would like the McCort's to just go away. But it looks to me like he has an agenda and will probably be in for some criticism for it.

"It's Apple, iPad's won't play Flash I believe and that is why the videos don't work."
Download Skyfire and use it as your browser on the iPad. It will play video.

Lorecore: The economics of the Chad Durbin issue are an entirely separate matter. But to claim that the Phillies have 7 better relievers than him is just an insult to intelligence.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Monday, February 28, 2011 at 12:03 PM
***Sounds a little like Bud is trying to choose who can and can't own a franchise.***
Of course he is...its probably his #1 job as Commissioner. MLB is a closed Monopoly that doesn't accept outsiders into their club. Why do you think Jeff Loria got another club after the Expos fiasco or John Henry and the BoSox? Or why they told Mark Cuban "Not no but HELL NO" on several ocasions. They dont want controversy, they dont want anyone rocking the boat. They accepted Steinbrenner because he brought a TON of money into the game and made them all rich but he also toed the line on important issues enough of the time.
On Durbin: I wish him luck but I'm not upset to see him gone. I'm happy to go into teh season with a little bit of cash and with a couple bullpen spots going to younger guys that need to break in anyway in low pressure roles.

I hate the phillies for giving me a shot (rule 5 draft) to be an everyday player after the dodgers gave up on me after I broke my wrist...
You know what I hate...
The way you spell Jayson, what did you go to the Danyz Baez school for spelling...
Pre-pubescent girls in my season ticket section in RF trying to get a look at Bieber's hairy uncle...
Jen Utley, makes you wonder about those rumors...
