Feels like a loss.

First comeback win after being down entering the 9th, 5-game series at home, and time for this team to finally begin to show something.
Need to win 4 this series and get close back to .500.
Posted by: MG | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 04:53 PM
They'll win 3 at best.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 05:14 PM
This is going to be one long a88 thread...
Thanks for the JTNC link, Zombie Corpse!
Posted by: Willard Preacher | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 05:24 PM
Yes, if they don't win 4 this series, they are surely finished.
Posted by: Iceman | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 05:24 PM
I actually think they'll win 3 or 4, slide past the Mets in the division, and stay enough games back to prevent any significant tinkering with the roster. This short term success will help to secure medium term mediocrity. Can't wait!
Seriously, though, I'm 110% clear on the lack of any real contention with this year's team. I am, however, extremely thankful that despite being fairly mediocre, they put together the occasional exciting game (see yesterday's first Wednesday win of the season) to keep me tuning in. I've always said that bad baseball beats no baseball at all. This team is actually quite a bit more fun to watch than that, even, despite their destiny as a 70-80 win squad. A crappy NL East only serves to prolong the excitement.
Posted by: Willard Preacher | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 05:28 PM
Do we get to know what happened to the Comcast posters? I admit to morbid curiosity on the subject.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 05:33 PM
WP, I think the reason you're enjoying the mediocre/bad baseball this season is that the team is actually playing better than last year's team.
People need reminding that last year's Pythagorean W-L was 66 - 96.
Sure their RECORD was better (73 wins), but the Pythag' was the QUALITY of baseball we were WATCHING.
So yeah, bad baseball is better than no baseball, and this year's team at least has a puncher's chance to win every night.
Last year it didn't feel that way.

BAP, I think it's scaring season, so Mike Wizowski is on sabbatical. Pretty sure Seidman is up-to-his-ears in other gigs (including an extremely overactive twitter account). And Finger's articles were only ever copy/paste to begin with, so they're saving money on an intern to hit ctrl+C, ctrl+V. There's a "jordan something or other," too, but clearly my inability to even remember his name indicates that we're likely not 'missing' him, exactly.
Posted by: Willard Preacher | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 05:40 PM
bap, WP nailed most of the points.
Clearly these guys are too busy over at downcast to do any work here.
If you look at their body of work you wonder how some of them keep jobs.
Posted by: awh™ | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 05:46 PM
texted my friend who is a mets fan that even if we take 4 of 5, we are still a game under .500 ugh.
Posted by: chilly | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 05:50 PM
or two...thats how much this season means to me.
Posted by: chilly | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 05:50 PM
"I think it's scaring season, so Mike Wizowski is on sabbatical"
Wait . . . didn't they ditch the whole idea of scaring season at the end of the movie?

Im clicking my ugly shoes and hoping for a winning run...Click..click..click..

Good points on pythag, awh.
While the vast majority of us (degenerates?) here aren't impressed with a dog and pony show looking to sell tickets based on the names of "hey, I heard of that guys," it is also refreshing to start a season with healthy core, even if that core is likely past the point of their prime and tying up payroll.
Posted by: Willard Preacher | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:12 PM
Why wouldn't the Comcast writers want to continue writing for BL? It's not like they get berated within 30 seconds of every post they make by multiple people that aren't pleased with the content.
It's a total mystery. This was such a rewarding job for them, I'm sure.

Just wait for hittin' season

From Gelb, on Bastardo:
"I feel good," Bastardo said. "I'm not pitching well."
...
The $2 million reliever started from scratch Thursday with the hopes of regaining confidence. Bastardo said his extra work Thursday focused on his rotation; he believed his right arm and torso were flying open. He wants to center his body on a straight line to home plate.

Same lineup as last night. Would've liked to see Gwynn in for No-Downtown Brown after Tony ignited last night's 9th-inning rally by hustling to first base and drawing a bad throw.
Posted by: M. Martinez | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:30 PM
Don't think the Phils will legitimately contend either and said at the start of May that if they weren't a few games over .500 or at least at .500 with their favorable schedule that they weren't contenders.
Just saying that if they are going to start to make a move they need to start doing it now.
Posted by: MG | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:31 PM
An M Martinez sighting!
I thought for sure you fell off the face of the Earth once Gwynn's OPS dropped below .700 over a month ago.
Really important to get a guy slashing .183/.301/.211/.512 into the lineup.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:40 PM
Thank you for a new thread header, by the way, JW.
And for the "Jump to newest comments" link.

"An M Martinez sighting!

Drop off the face of the earth? And miss that magical moment in tonight's game when Gwynn's OPS falls under .500?
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:47 PM
I just heard Chase call Boone Logan a "very tough lefty". I'm not sure but what Chase wasn't being a little generous.
Posted by: GBrettfan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:52 PM
Hopefully he won't get enough PA tonight for his OPS to drop 13 points.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:53 PM
Yeah, we probably unfairly picked on the site header contributors, but not necessarily for the content itself. It was the copy/paste from other CSN sites that only confirmed that BL is a "nuisance" in the larger Comcast world.
I do like that JW set up series headers and just lets the comments take it from there, since that always has been BL's crowning jewel. It would be cool to see the occasional guest header, or something in that vein, but I'll take the baby steps toward improving the site. I do give JW serious credit for that in the last couple months.
Posted by: Willard Preacher | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:56 PM
Boone Logan could go on to win 4 consecutive Cy Young awards and he'll still always be "the guy who gave up a HR to Ben Revere" to me.
Posted by: Willard Preacher | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:57 PM
It's the battle of the 2 worst teams in the division!
Posted by: Paco | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:58 PM
Hadn't really checked out Phillies team splits much this year, but looking over them now, one stands out. And it makes so much sense now looking back.
They've been horrible leading off an inning.
.224/.279/.313/.592
It's sure feels like the leadoff hitter never does anything and the numbers bear that out.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 06:59 PM
Also, as baffling as it's seemed at times, you can't really fault Sandberg's lineup construction.
1-2 (non-pitchers): .277/.352/.386/.738
3-6 (non-pitchers): .274/.338/.459/.797
7-9 (non-pitchers): .181/.268/.273/.541
That last group is simply atrocious.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:03 PM
Revere's actually been pretty good leading off, of late. In his last 8 games (post-bubonic plague/benching) he's got a .933 OPS, (12/30) with only 2 Ks.
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:06 PM
Nice smooth first inning

"Why wouldn't the Comcast writers want to continue writing for BL? It's not like they get berated within 30 seconds of every post they make by multiple people that aren't pleased with the content."
Point well taken. If someone goes to the trouble of posting an article -- even if it's just a reprint of what they wrote for Comcast -- it's obnoxious to attack that person. I do think the criticism is warranted, however, when the threads go stale for 5 days without an update, or when trolls are permitted to take over a thread without any action from whoever is running the blog.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:14 PM
As evidenced.

Oooh pitch #2 to Rollins should have been crushed out
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:19 PM
Wow, Revere looked out.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:19 PM
Nah, was safe.
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:20 PM
That was mighty close.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:20 PM
Or here's a thought: since this blog generates revenue due to advertisements, and advertisements only have an effect if people visit the blog, and since those running the blog are receiving remuneration for their troubles (or work experience that will lead to future remuneration), and presumably whoever is running the blog would want to ensure that the loyal visitors to the site stick around, along with newcomers wanting to join the community, perhaps...just perhaps, they can take seriously the complaints of those who frequent the site, and not get offended when their lackluster thread headers are posted, or not posted at all, as it were.
Posted by: Fatalotti | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:20 PM
Listening to the Mets broadcast makes me sad that the Phillies tv team is so bad.
Posted by: kuvasz | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:21 PM
Revere
Last season: 22 SB, 8 CS
This season: 14 SB, 2 CS
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:21 PM
And whether or not they were actually offended, is of course, speculation on Iceman's part. Perhaps this site just isn't generating enough revenue to warrant any activity on Comcast's part, and they will keep it up as long as it doesn't become a dead weight.
Posted by: Fatalotti | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:22 PM
Fatalotti, from a 3rd-person perspective, most of the complaints seemed to boil down to: "Hey! You're not
my real dadJW!"Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:22 PM
Damn, great location to get Chase looking
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:23 PM
"And whether or not they were actually offended, is of course, speculation on Iceman's part."
I recall Corey specifically taking umbrage at some of the comments -- especially at the beginning. So it's not total speculation.

Wheeler has some good stuff
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:24 PM
BAP, I'll amend to "offended to the point of not posting anymore".
I do remember Seidman not taking even warranted criticism well at all.

Great pitch to Howard, too. You see him that inning and wonder how he could ever have a 2-month stretch where he's got an ERA near 5, particularly pitching in the cavern he plays in.
Must pitch a lot on the road.

Buchanan getting crushed... even on outs
This does not bode well
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:29 PM
No faith in Buchanan to pull an Adams here.
I'd be happy if he just gives up 2.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:31 PM
Phew. Good play by Rollins.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:33 PM
Turned out surprisingly well. If he continues this trend (a run every other inning) we won't have much to complain about.
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:35 PM

*******
No, but we will be behind about two runs in the 6th.

Oh, definitely. But about all we can ask from a Buchanan-type.
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:37 PM
Doesn't look like they're touching Wheeler today
Make him work and get to the bullpen

The Phillies best 3rd round pick ever is J.A. Happ. Fun list.

Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:39 PM
Fat: Disagreement and constructive criticism are great. But a lot of the criticism which has been directed at the new writers just boils down to, "You suck" or "Man, these new writers sure are garbage compared to jw." That kind of criticism isn't constructive. It's just rude.
If I go to a restaurant that I don't like, I deal with it by not returning. I don't show up at the restaurant 3 times a week and tell the chef how crappy his food is. If I were writing a blog, and everything I ever posted was met with immediate derision, it sure as hell wouldn't make me all that eager to write the next post. I think Iceman has a pretty good point here. People can't rip everything these guys write & then complain that they don't write.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:40 PM
Strike 2 to Chooch was not a strike
Wheeler certainly doesn't need that kind of help
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:40 PM
As to Wheeler, his OPS becomes monstrous once he reaches the 5th inning (1.064) this season. Last year it crept up in the 4th (.775), and pretty much only went up from there.
He strikes me as a Vance Worley type, with somewhat better staying power because he doesn't depend on called 3rd strikes as much. He's great if you don't see him throw much, but if you get him to overexert himself, he gets much less effective by the 3rd time through the order.
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:41 PM
Again with the incompetent umpiring.
Posted by: bittel | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:41 PM
Choooooch
Nice time to come out of your slump, Cesar...
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:42 PM
Hey, I think most of the criticism the new writers got was completely warranted- though a lot of the criticism was extremely inartful and over the top at times (particularly from awh, who will claim that he's just criticizing 'slack work').
I just don't think it's a mystery why they suddenly disappeared. For one, as BAP mentioned, they expressed displeasure in the comment section more than once after receiving criticism for something. And for two, what's in it for them, really? I doubt they're making more money copy/pasting articles on to this site. Comcast has long since given up on this place. They aren't part of any community here. Why would they continue to do something that is of no benefit to them, while the people that actually read their content here do nothing but hammer them mercilessly?
Posted by: Iceman | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:43 PM
Man, that sucked. If it weren't for Wheeler's (apparently) massive backside that would have been a run.
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:43 PM
" If it weren't for Wheeler's (apparently) massive backside that would have been a run."
Yeah, that was a bad break -- especially with the pitcher coming up.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:44 PM
Buchanan has no shot here.
Dang that bad luck of Cesar's shot hitting Wheeler.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:44 PM
That's a good point Iceman. I concede.
Posted by: Fatalotti | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:45 PM
Buchanan wanted to take the lead with that swing.
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:45 PM
Strike my 7:43 post from the record because BAP basically said exactly what I was trying to say in his 7:40 post.
Hell has frozen over.
Posted by: Iceman | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:45 PM
On pace for 27 Ks
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:45 PM
These outs are getting less killed.
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:49 PM
Wow, that 2-1 pitch to Wright was also low. At least Buchanan got the call as well.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:51 PM
Heckler I can hear on the broadcast:
"Hey, David, why don't you join a winning team? (pause) Not the Phillies."
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:52 PM
Right now we a short losing streak from basically been eliminated. They must start to turn this around and at least get to .500 soon.
Posted by: "Howard Eskins Ugly Shoes" | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:53 PM
Unless someone in the NLE starts turning it around massively, a 3-game losing streak would not put us out of it.
That said, it's unlikely we make the playoffs regardless.
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:55 PM
What 'buster said.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:58 PM
That wasn't foul?
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:59 PM
Cesar tried to take out Wheeler with the ball. That didn't work, so Chase threw his bat at him.
What's it gonna take???
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:00 PM
Game = Over
Gotta win 4 in a row now or Season = Over
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:05 PM
This is more like the David Buchanan I was expecting to see the last time out.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:05 PM
Only 52 pitches through 4.
Still a chance for the ol' quality start.
I just hope the bullpen comes in and gives up 1-2 runs so we can blame the loss on them and not the offense.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:08 PM
Just let that hanging curveball go on the first pitch, Ryan
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:10 PM
Yeah not touching Wheeler at all.
Keep it within 3 to hang onto the chance for magic.
Posted by: Cyclic | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:18 PM
Wheeler waits until the 5th to implode. I say the 6th given how quickly some of our outs have been, but we've still got a shot.
Of course, we have to capitalize once that shot appears...
Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:21 PM
I have visions of dropping 4 of 5 to the Mets. Buchanan AKA replacement player, Burnett who's started to struggle, Cole who doesn't fare well v. the Mets, KK and Hernandez who are up and down. And that's just our starting pitchers. There's still our BP and our prone-to-narcolepsy offense.
Posted by: GBrettfan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:21 PM
If Buchanan can give them 6 and 3 tonight, that is about all you can expect out of him.
Posted by: MG | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:21 PM
cesar can spin gold into straw.
Posted by: bullit | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:24 PM
That's just unacceptable. Cesar isn't a 3rd baseman, so I could understand if he made some throwing-related gaffes. But I expect him to be able to field a ground ball.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:24 PM
Ugh give up a leadoff hit to a poor-hitting pitcher.
Buchanan looks like he has a half-decent changeup but he throws way too many hittable 4-seam fastballs at 91-92.
Needs to throw less of them and learn to improve his cutter/sinker.
Posted by: MG | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:24 PM
WTH Cesar?
Posted by: GBrettfan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:25 PM
He fielded it, then didn't try to tag out the lead runner. That's dumb. Literally dumb.

Oh brother. Just cut him already.
Posted by: bay_area_phan | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:26 PM
As poorly as Frandsen has played for the Nats (.239/.302/.318) with shoddy defense, the Phils did make a mistake by letting him go in spring.
Replacements for the Phils at 3B have been that bad.
Posted by: MG | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:27 PM
Unless someone in the NLE starts turning it around massively, a 3-game losing streak would not put us out of it.

Posted by: Phillibuster | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 07:55 PM
With this team yes. They are unlikely to play better than .600...we would basically be tethering on be taking out contention with a 4-5 game losing streak...That is unless the Braves do their usual collapse..
Posted by: "Howard Eskins Ugly Shoes" | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:28 PM
Hernandez just froze and seemingly didn't know what to do there. Brutal.
Posted by: MG | Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 08:29 PM
As horrific as Brignac is as a hitter, they'd be better off with him in there.
